After-sun care can help soothe skin after time outside. Aloe vera gel and after-sun moisturisers may help soothe uncomfortable skin, but they do not undo UV damage or replace sunscreen. If your skin burns, get out of the sun and protect it while it heals.
After-sun care questions
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests a moisturiser containing aloe vera or soy for sunburn discomfort. A cool bath or shower and gentle moisturising can help. Avoid adding products that sting or irritate the skin. A gel marketed for after-sun use is not automatically suitable for every person.
How long does sunburn take to heal?
The NHS says sunburn usually improves within seven days, although severity matters. Peeling can begin after a few days. Do not pick peeling skin or pop blisters. Seek prompt medical advice for blistering or swelling, fever, dizziness, nausea, or sunburn in a baby or young child. Severe symptoms need medical care rather than another after-sun product.
Does Banana Boat after-sun gel expire?
An after-sun gel can deteriorate over time. Check your bottle for a printed expiry date, storage directions, or an open-jar period-after-opening symbol. If the date is unclear, ask the manufacturer using the product name and lot code. We have not confirmed one shelf life that applies to every Banana Boat after-sun gel, so we do not present the sunscreen three-year rule as a gel expiry date.
Sunscreen expiry is not a cosmetic expiry rule
The FDA explains that cosmetic shelf life depends on formulation, storage, and use. Heat and contamination can affect a product. Replace a gel that has changed noticeably in colour, smell, or texture, and ask the manufacturer if you cannot establish its age. A normal appearance alone does not establish that an old product is suitable to use.
After-sun care and your next day outside
Once you are planning outdoor time again, use clothing, shade, and correctly applied sunscreen. Our beach checklist and label guide help you prepare.
Choosing an after-sun care product
Choose by the actual formula and how your skin tolerates it, rather than the picture of an aloe leaf on the front. A gel and a cream may feel different, and either can contain fragrance or other ingredients that do not suit you. Read the complete label and stop using a product that irritates your skin.
Keep an older bottle’s history in mind. A product left in a hot car, shared carelessly, or stored without a secure cap deserves a different assessment from a newly opened bottle stored as directed. If you cannot identify its age or the manufacturer’s guidance, contact the brand rather than guessing from appearance alone.
After-sun questions
Does aloe vera gel reverse sun damage?
No. A soothing product may help with discomfort, but it does not undo UV damage or make it safe to continue exposing burned skin to the sun.
Does every Banana Boat after-sun gel last three years?
We have not verified one expiry period for every after-sun formula. The sunscreen expiry guidance should not be automatically applied to a cosmetic gel. Check the package or ask the manufacturer using the lot code.
