This editorial policy explains how we research and compare sunscreen products. Our comparisons help readers decide which published product features match their needs. They are research-based assessments, not hands-on tests. When a brand describes a finish or texture, we attribute that claim to the brand. We do not present it as our own experience.

Our editorial policy for product research

We award one point for each confirmed feature:

  1. Broad-spectrum protection with SPF 30 or higher.
  2. SPF 50 or higher.
  3. Mineral active filters only.
  4. No added fragrance in the published formula.
  5. Labeled water resistance of 80 minutes.

However, we give no point for a feature we cannot confirm. The mineral-filter point reflects the focus of this particular shortlist; it does not mean that non-mineral sunscreens are ineffective or unsuitable. The score does not measure UVA protection beyond the broad-spectrum label, comfort, white cast, environmental impact, or value for money.

Why five out of five does not mean best for everyone

For example, a tinted SPF 30 face lotion may fit a daily routine better than an SPF 50 beach lotion. A fragrance-free product can still cause a reaction. Water resistance is useful for swimming but is not the only consideration for an office day. Read the product summary and limitations alongside the number. Our list order is editorial rather than a descending score ranking.

Sources and product matching

We start with the exact product name, SPF, format, size, shade, and market. We then use brand pages and labels on DailyMed to support the facts. Each review links to a source. We also check Amazon listings to match the product. However, stock, sellers, prices and variants can change. The label supplied with the product takes priority over a summary on this site.

Corrections and commercial relationships

We may receive Amazon commissions from qualifying purchases. Our link policy appears in the affiliate disclosure. Also, Amazon customer ratings do not form part of our feature scores. To report an error, contact us with a source or a current label. Updates carry a revised date when the substance of a guide changes.
