Anyone who’s ever suffered the pain of a jellyfish sting knows it’s an experience they never want to repeat. Marine biologist and jellyfish toxin expert Dr. Amit Lotan, PhD. has developed Safe Sea®, the first product to combine sunblock with protection against the stings of jellyfish and other stinging aquatic creatures.
By creating a surface barrier on the skin much like the one clownfish employ to avoid anemone stings, Safe Sea® offers protection against the stings of such jellyfish as the Atlantic Box jellyfish and Rhopilema, Sea Nettle, Fire Coral, Sea lice and other stinging aquatic organisms. How does Safe Sea® actually stop Jellyfish and sea lice stings?
– Very slippery: Safe Sea® is extremely waterproof, with a slippery texture that makes it hard for the stinging tentacles of sea lice and jellyfish to attach to the skin.
– Safe Sea has taken a great “tip” from our fish friend the Clown Fish: our technology absorbs secretions from the skin that would otherwise tell the jellyfish that it’s in contact with prey or predator.
– Disrupt communications: Chemical stoppers in Safe Sea lotion ® block the chemical pathways where the stinging mechanism is activated.
Disarm: A stinging cell is a dense “capsule” containing a long folded needle. Pressure builds in this capsule just before stinging, As the pressure builds, the capsule is forced to open, and the arrow shoots out, injecting its target with toxin at a force equivalent to a shot being fired from a firearm. This all happens in a very short time (a fraction of a second) jellyfish stings are among the most rapid mechanical events in all of cellular biology.

It’s important to know about our 4 tips to reach the best sun and jellyfish protection results when using Safe Sea sunscreen:
It is recommended to apply safe sea lotion at least 30 minutes before exposure to sun rays or the first time entering the water source.
We highly recommend applying sunscreen generously over the whole body. The skin should be completely dry when applying the our product.
Please try your best not to leave any areas unprotected: jellyfish will discharge thier stinging cells with barely any contact with human skin.
Best practice for deciding the correct quantity to apply in order to evaluate the effectiveness of any sunscreen’s SPF value for pretty much any individual skin type, it should be tested, by applying 2mg/cm2 of product to the wide area of the back.
A typical adult, 1,70m tall, usually needs approximately 30ml of sunscreen with an appropriate SPF value for complete body coverage. Less than recommended appliance values will not provide the appropriate solar protection.
To ensure correct application we would recommend following the “7 Teaspoon Rule”. This method recommends applying a teaspoonful (of Safe Sea) to each of the seven parts of the body (i.e. legs, arms, torso, back & face) as follows:

Safe Sea® products are clinically tested to prevent stings of most jellyfish (including Atlantic Box jellyfish and Rhopilema), Sea Nettle, and Seabathers Eruption (commonly known as sea lice). All of these belong to the Cnidarian family, and each shares the same stinging mechanism. Safe Sea targets this stinging mechanism, not the individual jellyfish. So all members of the species will have an extremely difficult time getting past Safe Sea.
All varieties of Safe Sea® are approved for use on children six months of age and older. The SPF50+ Kids variety contains an alternate sunscreen formula which is less likely to cause a reaction on children with sensitive skin. We do not recommend using the lotion on babies younger than six months old.
Safe Sea® sting prevention lotion is available in some surf shops seasonally. However, it can be nearly hard to find, and your safest option is to order directly online if you need it by a specific date. It is not currently available at any major retailer.
